The small water bodies of Ruissalo

There are a few natural small water bodies on Ruissalo, as well as ponds formed as a result of various excavations. Additionally, wetlands have been build in front of ditches connected to the sea to sequester nutrients that would otherwise drain directly into the sea and cause eutrophication. Regardless of how they are formed, small water bodies are crucial for biodiversity. They form habitats that differ significantly from their surroundings, accommodating species that have adapted to aquatic life as well as species that need water at some specific stage of their life. The flora and fauna of small water bodies are rich and diverse – comprising far more than the obvious frogs and toads. This is why small water bodies are worth protecting.
